9/19/2022 - Why One Shouldn't Fall in Love with Young Squirrels

Two young Cooper's hawks on two consecutive days!  Hawks troll my back yard for songbirds, water . . . and young squirrels.

A couple of years ago I noticed several young Cooper's hawks fledging in an empty lot near the end of our block.  Steve alerted me to several squirrel skeletons near the fence.  As the weeks went by the number of skeletons increased.   Mama hawk was feeding the young squirrels to her own young.  Even Steve and Shirley caught, killed and ate a young red squirrel in our back yard a couple of years ago!  Mother Nature doesn't play favorites and neither, I guess, should we.
