Last night my neighbor sent me a picture of an owlet he saw in his backyard. After consulting with the ABA Facebook ID page I concluded that it was of a great horned owlet. This morning, the crows alerted me to look outside and I saw they were fussing at the owlet, now up in the cottonwood tree! After looking around a bit, I discovered mama owl keeping watch.
It's been a cold, dreary and damp day, but the owlet has perched stoically, for hours, in the drizzle.
Mama kept watch for a long time then left to find lunch and came back again with a snack. It's still out there alone. I hope mama comes back to keep her offspring company overnight.
